well it seems that the korean film industry is already off to a very strong start this
year.
that's right and i think a lot of people saw this one coming so it was just a matter of
time. the attorney's popularity has not just been
limited to theaters but it is said to be quite a hit online as well.
is that so
yes the film currently has one of the highest illegal download rates in korea.
which of course is a practice that hurts the whole film industry.
and today you also have news about another film that actually knocked the attorney out
of its top spot this weekend
that's right conn-young and there is no shame in that.
this film seems to be icing the competition all around the world -- in theaters on the
music charts and soon hopefully we'll be seeing it on stage too.
even before the movie opened last thursday it already had the highest ticket sales in
korea. and it has since knocked the blockbuster korean
film the attorney out of its place after four straight weeks at the top.
the animated musical frozen tells the story of two estranged sister princesses trying
to unfreeze their kingdom -- and just like its name it is icing its competition around
the world too. the film had grossed roughly $669 million
u.s. dollars worldwide since its opening on november 27th -- and that was before opening
in the asian markets of korea china and japan -- giving disney its first grandslam in two
decades. and the list of accomplishments doesn't stop
there. frozen took home the golden globe for best
animated feature just last week making it the best debut in disney's history -- ever
. that is including past hits such as the lion
king and the little mermaid made during disney 's golden years from 1984 to 1994.
as a testament to the film's musical score the soundtrack currently sits atop the billboard
200 as the number-one album of the week ecl ipsing the likes of mega-stars such as beyonce
and eminem. and as further evidence of its success disney
ceo bob iger told fortune magazine in a recent interview that the company is planning to
turn the film into a musical theater production -- another first for disney.
the timeframe for the musical is yet to be determined but iger told fortune that the
goal for the musical is excellence and not speed.
so it is apparent that the film is a global success and it is already doing well here
in korea as well.
certainly. and i think the secret was really what it always is for an animated musical
from disney and that is the music. i actually saw the film this weekend -- and
all throughout the film i was thinking to myself that it would make for a perfect musical
.
but won't a lot of adults be hesitant to see an animated feature
well i don't think they should be it's definitely a film that grown-ups can enjoy especially
if you're a fan of musicals -- or music for that matter.
the man behind the music is tony award-winning composer and lyricist robert lopez who did
worked on the broadway hits the book of mor mon and avenue q which probably explains why
the music for frozen felt so accessible.
alright. well thank you for that update today tae ho and we'll see you again tomorrow.
okay have a great monday.
